Ryan received a tadpole habitat for his 5th birthday. We ordered the tadpole and waited three months for it to arrive (the company only mails them Nov.-March). Ryan was very excited when his tadpole arrive the first week in Dec. He named "her" Phoebe (after the girl on the Magic School Bus). She was so tiny that I couldn't even take a picture. She looked like a speck in the water! For the longest time Phoebe didn't change much. Then in January we saw the first leg growing. It was so neat! By the middle of February, she had both legs, and at the end of February she jumped out of the water. We were all excited to see her as a frog! Sadly, Phoebe didn't live very long as a frog. I think that I rushed too quickly in changing her food from fish food to baby crickets. : ( Ryan was terribly distraught over losing Phoebe, although he tried hard not to let it bother him, he just couldn't hold back this grief and tears. It broke my heart to see him so sad.
If we do this again, I'm not going to use the little habitat as it was a pain to keep clean and it leaked. The plastic also made it difficult to see the tadpole/frog, which kind of defeats the purpose.
